ANZAC Day Pilgimage 2020 with Somme & Flanders
This tour will follow our Soldiers through their journey in WW1 & WW11, featuring ANZAC Day Dawn Service at ANZAC Cove.
The green, rolling fields of Northern France have been the scene of battles and conflict for thousands of years. This battlefields tour is perfectly timed to observe the Anzac Day dawn at Villers Bretonneux, a small town liberated from German forces by the Australian Imperial Force, 87 years to the day earlier. Visit sites of famous battles from the wars of days past while remembering the bravery, and sacrifice of ANZAC soldiers who fought for the liberty and freedom of countries a world away

Day 1 Wednesday 22 April 2020 AUSTRALIA/ISTANBUL We board our International flight to Istanbul.
Day 2 Thursday 23 April 2020 ISTANBUL (D) On arrival at Istanbul airport transferred to accommodation in (Yasmak Sultan Hotel or similar. Our hotel will be in the Old City close to Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Grand Bazaar.
Tonight enjoy our Welcome Dinner and meet your fellow travellers and your local guide.
Day 3 Friday 24 April 2020 ISTANBUL/GALLIPOLI PENINSULAR (B/D) This morning after breakfast we make our way to the Gallipoli Peninsular stopping En Route for lunch. Relax on this drive as you see the amazing Turkish countryside. Cross the Dardanelles to our hotel arriving in the afternoon. (Grand Anzac Hotel Canakkale or similar) Dinner is included tonight.
Tonight after dinner we will leave our hotel to travel to ANZAC Cove. Cross the Dardanelles by ferry and travel to our drop off point to go through security. Prepare for a cold night and be mindful that it could rain. You will have some hours at the site before the service begins.
You will have been given a breakfast/lunch pack to take with you for the 25th April.
Day 4 Saturday 25 April 2020 ANZAC DAY (B/L/D) ANZAC Day Service -Lone Pine Service. After the ANZAC Day service you walk to Lone Pine . You will walk along ANZAC cove to Artillery Road to Lone Pine. Please note that it is a steep climb. There are transports to take you there but you must have a medical certificate. Lone Pine service always after the ANZAC Service and you will have plenty of time to walk there. Once the service is finished we may have a wait for our coach to collect us and take us back to our hotel at Canakkale. Dinner at the hotel tonight.
Day 5 Sunday 26 April 2020 GALLIPOLI (B/L/D) Today we revisit Gallipoli and will stop at sites like Brighton’s Beach where the planned landing should have been. Beach Cemetery to visit Simpson (The man with the donkey’s) grave, Shrapnel Valley, The Nek and many more significant ANZAC sites and cemeteries.
Stop for your picnic lunch and later continue our touring at Gallipoli. In the afternoon return to Canakkale crossing the Dardanelles where dinner is included.
Day 6 Monday 27 April 2020 GALLIPOLI/ISTANBUL (B/L) This morning we pack our suitcases and head off once more across the Dardanelles to the southern tip of Gallipoli Cape Helles. The landing at Cape Helles was part of the amphibious invasion of the Gallipoli peninsula by British and French forces on 25 April 1915 during the First World War. Helles, at the foot of the peninsula, was the main landing area.
On our return we travel via the stately Turkish memorial . We stop for our included lunch and return to Istanbul in the evening. Dinner tonight is own arrangements
Day7 Tuesday 28 April 2020 ISTANBUL (B/L) Walking tour today will take us to exotic Istanbul with its amazing Mosques Museums and Bazaars. Visit the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia Museum, Underground Cistern, ending a the most amazing Grand Bazaar. We stop for lunch included and continue our touring. Tonight, dinner is your own arrangement. There are many restaurants in the area.
Day 8 Wednesday 29 April 2020 ISTANBUL FREE DAY (B/D) Today is a free day to relax, shop or visit some of the other attractions in Istanbul, such as Topkapi Palace which was the main residence and headquarters of the ottoman Sultans. Here you find beautiful gardens, visit the Harem and the Treasury which houses precious and semi precious jewels. You can easily spend most of the day wandering around the palace and its very close to our hotel. Maybe a relaxing cruise on the Bosphorus and view Istanbul from the Asian and European side. Or lose yourselves in the rabbit warrens of the Grand bazaar to make some last-minute purchases. Tonight, we have our farewell Dinner.
Day 9 Thursday 30 April ISTANBUL/PARIS (B) This morning after an early breakfast we are transferred to Istanbul Airport for our flight to Paris arriving early afternoon. On arrival in Paris we will be transferred to our hotel close to Opera area. After check in we will meet for a short orientation walk. Tonight we have our own arrangements for dinner at one of the many restaurants nearby. Accommodation Opera Cadet or similar
Day 10 Friday 01 May PARIS (B) 48 Hour Hop on Hop off Bus Today our Hop on Hop off bus will take us around all of Paris. You have a choice of at least 4 routes which take in Champs Elysees, Eiffel Tower, Montmartre, Notre Damme, Louvre and many many more iconic sites of Paris. You will be able to travel individually or as a group.
Day 11 Saturday 02 May PARIS (B/D) A free day to take advantage of your hop on Hop off bus pass.
Meet this evening at the hotel so we can have our included farewell dinner.
Day 12 Sunday 03 May PARIS/ARRAS (B/D) Your transfer will collect us from our Paris hotel and take us to Gare Du Nord where we board our TGV train to Arras. Our journey is approximately 60 minutes. On arrival in Arras we make our way across the square to our centrally located hotel. Lunch is own arrangements .
After lunch we will meet our Experienced battlefields guide and take a short walk to Wellington Tunnels to discover the underground life of the Commonwealth Armies. Here you will see tunnels first dug during the Middle Ages, then used again in WW1. Anzac Tunnelers used these tunnels to link quarters for the 24,000 soldiers before the Battle of Arras in 1917.
Tonight we will enjoy our included Welcome dinner at one of the restaurants nearby. Accommodation Hotel Moderne or Similar.
Day 13 Monday 04 May SOMME (B/L) Following our Soldiers onto the Somme battlefields,
Our touring over the next two days takes us to some important sites in the Somme and around Pozieres. Please note that the itinerary may not necessarily be in the order stated as there will be private cemetery visits and we do work our touring around this important part of your visit.
Australian 1 st Division Memorial and the famous Windmill on the Ridge. Pass by Mouquet Farm, site of a series of bloody battles which resulted in the loss of 6,300 allied troops. Our visit to Villers Bretonneux Memorial , where our ANZAC Day service takes place will allow us to see the wonderful Sir John Monash Museum. Lunch is included and Dinner own arrangements.
Day 14 Tuesday 05 May SOMME (B/L) After breakfast we have today visiting more of the battlefield sites, cemeteries, memorials. Such as Bullecourt with the Slouch Hat. Lochnager Crater near the town of Albert. Le Hamel where Monash led the Australians on a revolutionary and very successful attack which combined tanks, artillery and infantry. Perhaps catch a glimpse of the crash site of the Red Barron. Visit Mont St Quentin in 1918 and Peronne. Lunch included – Dinner is at your own arrangements.
Day15 Wednesday 06 May SOMME/YPRES (B/D) Depart for Belgium and travel through the Canadian battlefield at Vimy Ridge , Visit Fromelles where two thousand Australian Men died in a single night and learn about their sacrifice at the unique Cobbers Memorial and VC Corner at Fromelles Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery. Lunch own arrangements will be just before we travel into Belgium. This village is renown for its potato fries and chocolate…we will have time to pick up our chocolate supplies. Accommodation Ypres (Central Location) Dinner included.
Day 16 Thursday 07 May FLANDERS TOURING (B/L) Over the next two days we will be visiting many of the battlefield sites in Flanders -such as Polygon Wood, Hooge Crater, Hill 60 , Menin road, Passchendaele and the Largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the world Tyne Cot. Tyne Cot is the resting place of two Australian VC winners.
Day 17 Friday 08 May FLANDERS TOURING /MENIN GATE LAST POST SERVICE (B) This morning continue our touring of Flanders and pass by Langemark German Cemetery to see the resting place of thousands of men, who just like the Australians, followed the orders of their superiors and paid the ultimate price. Today we have the opportunity for special cemetery visits. We return to Ypres for Lunch (Own arrangements) and this afternoon is free.
Why not visit the beautiful cloth hall which houses a wonderful museum dedicated to WW1.
Tonight we meet and walk to Menin Gate for The Last Post Ceremony. Dinner is own arrangement
Day 18 Saturday 09 May YPRES TO NORMANDY (B) Depart Ypres for Normandy farewelling the WW1 portion of our tour stopping EnRoute for a quick lunch (Own arrangements). We will travel to Pegasus Museum, dedicated to the story of the heroic D Day assault by the British Airborne Troops on Pegasus. Learn more about the amazing pilots who landed their gliders so close to Pegasus Bridge.
We then travel to Normandy where we stay for the next 3 nights. Dinner/Lunch own arrangements
Day 19 Sunday 10 May NORMANDY (B/L) Visit the D-Day landing beaches of Omaha, Gold Juneau and revisit how the D-Day landings took place. You will see the massive American Cemetery of Colleville Sur mer as seen in “Saving Private Ryan” Explore numerous other WW11 battlefield sites and places of interest.
Day 20 Monday 11 May NORMANDY (B/L) Today we visit more of the battlefield sites, and see Mulberry Harbour and artificial harbour and an amazing feat of engineering in WW11 which allowed Allied soldiers to bring ashore crucial heavy munitions. This area is well know for its Calvados and perhaps we will get chance to do some tastings.
Day 21 Tuesday 12 May MONT ST MICHEL (B) After breakfast visit the impressive Mont St Michel where you can explore the many shops and wonder at this ornate medieval castle/monastery. There are many places at the Mont where you can enjoy lunch and dinner.
Day 22 Wednesday 13 May MONT ST MICHEL TO ARRAS (B/D) Say goodbye to Normandy region and return to Arras where we have our last night and say farewell to our Battlefields Guide. Dinner is included and will be at a local restaurant.
Day 23 Thursday 14 May ARRAS/PARIS/AUSTRALIA Catch an early train back to Paris Charles Du Gaulle in time for our return flight to Australia arriving Saturday 16 May 2020
