Bundaberg and the Turtles of Mon Repos

On the coast of Bundaberg, Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern Australian mainland and has the most significant loggerhead turtle nesting population in the South Pacific Region. It is an amazing sight to see these huge creatures heaving their way up the beach to find a safe spot to dig a nest and lay their eggs. 6-8 weeks later see the tiny hatchlings emerging from their sandy nests to scurry down the beach towards the sea. Visitors can witness hatching turtles over the summer months on Mon Repos beach, on a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service ranger guided turtle encounter. A special ranger led experience has been carefully created to help you understand and appreciate the life cycle of the turtle, to manage turtle watching, and ensure successful breeding for the survival of this endangered species.

Bundaberg Sights & Mon Repos Turtles
Begin the day at the Hinkler Hall of Aviation. This impressive structure is a dynamic and unique design of soaring glass and steel constructed in the shape of an aircraft wing. The Hinkler Hall of Aviation brings to life the adventures and achievements of Australia's famous pioneer solo aviator Bert Hinkler. Become part of the story through interactive displays; fly like Bert on the distinctive flight and glide simulators, be enthralled by Bert's life achievements and personal story in the movie theatrettes, sit in the replica Avro Baby Aircraft and view the original from his record-setting 1921 flight. Next, view magnificent Indian bungalow architecture and discover the history of the Bundaberg sugar industry and the pioneer sugar families through a one hour guided tour of the heritage listed homestead Fairymead House and Sugar History Museum. Later, enjoy a delicious lunch at Café 1928 located in the Bundaberg Botanic Garden before heading for what may be Bundaberg’s most visited attraction – the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. On the Distillery Experience guided tour, your tour guide will lead you to the swirling wells of molasses, mysterious processes of fermentation and distillation, around to the grand Barrelhouse where you walk through a historic oak vat the size of a small house. There will be time to visit the retail store before returning to your motel to freshen up for an early dinner and an evening at Mon Repos. Arrive at the Visitors Centre where you can talk with the Rangers and watch informative videos before heading down to the beach to witness the hatchlings emerge from their nests to instinctively head towards the water. Please Note: February is hatchling season and you’ll be amazed viewing the baby turtles emerging from their nests, however please remember the nests are on the beach and therefore you must be able to walk unaided through soft sand. Some level of fitness is required, and the beach is not suitable to wheelie walkers. Meals: BLD

Day 3: Thursday 7 February 2019
Bundaberg to Toowoomba
Before departing Bundaberg,  visit another famous Bundaberg attraction – The Bundaberg Barrel. Discover the secrets of Bundaberg Brewed Drinks with a variety of hands-on activities at the home of ginger beer. Take an amazing journey through the True Brew Experience Tour. Use the interactive touch screens to see what happens to the humble ginger root as it’s crushed, brewed and fermented to make the world’s finest ginger beer. You can also sit back and enjoy the unique 15-minute 3D hologram adventure, ‘Doug’s Promised Land’ in the theatre. Mid-morning, depart the North Burnett Region and travel south along the Bruce Highway to Maryborough West for lunch. The afternoon will have you heading back to Toowoomba via Kilkivan and Nanango to arrive back around 5.30pm after a great 3 days away. (Meals: BL)

*Please Note: Although Jan-Mar is the best time to view the hatchlings, these are wild animals and sometimes it can take several hours for them to emerge. Occasionally, no hatchlings emerge from the nest at all. Unfortunately, we cannot say how long you may have wait for them to emerge from their nest, nor can we guarantee that you will see turtle hatchlings.
