A Note From Our Tour Leader - David

The excitement was palpable as the specially chartered QANTAS 747 headed south over the South Pacific Ocean, the first couple of hours we enjoyed a documentary about the life of researchers on the ground before reality began to dawn as the captain patched through a live phone call to an Australian resident and researcher at the Australian research station on the Antarctic continent. We were all captivated by the novelty of hearing a weather report from the ground below. The buzz continued to grow until a sudden whirlwind of excitement spread through the cabin as passengers started reporting small glimpses of ice through gaps in the cloud cover, an obstacle that we were warned to expect. Soon, the expert pilots plotted their course around the bank of clouds and gasps were heard all around the plane as the endless white expanse came into view.
Antarctica is big.
Really big!
For the next 4 hours, the plane cruised low and slow across the continent, over miles of white terrain punctuated by surprising towering mountains, mammoth ravines, gigantic ice floes and glaciers and icy cliffs. Witnessing this stark and isolated land at the bottom of our planet was certainly nothing short of humbling and an eye-opening experience.
