ANZAC Day in the Somme

The green, rolling fields of Northern France have been the scene of battles and conflict for thousands of years. This battlefields tour is perfectly timed to observe the Anzac Day dawn at Villers Bretonneux, a small town liberated from German forces by the Australian Imperial Force, 86 years to the day earlier. Visit sites of famous battles from the wars of days past while remembering the bravery, and sacrifice of ANZAC soldiers who fought for the liberty and freedom of countries a world away.

Day 1: ARRAS – Tuesday 24 April
Your tour commences in Arras, an easy 50 minute train journey from Paris. Meet your tour manager and group by 9:30am in the hotel lobby before a short walk to the Wellington tunnels to discover the underground life of the Commonwealth Armies. Here, you’ll see tunnels, first dug during the Middle Ages, then used again in World War 1. Anzac Tunnelers used these tunnels to link quarters for 24,000 soldiers before the Battle of Arras in 1917. Enjoy the afternoon at your leisure. before a group welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2: ANZAC DAY – Wednesday 25 April
Rise very early to arrive and find a position for Anzac Day Dawn Service at Villers Bretonneux. Representatives from your group will lay a wreath at the ceremony. Then, visit Villers Bretonneux to explore and reflect.
More information on the about the order of the ceremonies will be supplied in final documentation. If time allows, you may also have the opportunity to attend the Slouch hat Commemorative service. (B)

Day 3: ARRAS - Thur 26 April 
Visit and be guided through some important sites in the Somme and around the village of Pozieres. Visit the Australian 1st Division Memorial and the famous Windmill site on the ridge. Pass by Mouquet Farm, site of a series of bloody battles which resulted in the loss of some 6,300 allied troops. Visit Thiepval Memorial, dedicated to 73,000 missing British Troops. See the preserved trenches at the Newfoundland Memorial Park before reaching the Lochnager Crater near the town of Albert. This Massive Crater resulted from the detonation of a powerful mine marking the commencement of the Battle of the Somme on 1 July 1916. Continue on to the Australian Corps Memorial at Le Hamel, where Monash led the Australians on a revolutionary and very successful attack which combined tanks, artillery and infantry. Pay your respects at the Adelaide Cemetery (where the Unknown Soldier who now rests in the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, was exhumed). Also, catch a glimpse of the crash site of the Red Baron. Day 4: ARRAS –Fri 27 April
Today, continue your tour visiting the quaint town of Peronne and the Museum of the Great War. Pay respects at the 2nd Division memorial the scene of one of Australia’s finest feats of arms, the daring and decisive battle and capture of Mont St Quentin in 1918. Then continue exploring the Arras region. (BL)

Day 5: TOUR END – Sat 28 April
After a well deserved nights rest, check out your hotel accommodation and transfer to your onward destination.
