The unassuming state of South Australia boasts a deceptively large number of Australia's greatest wonders. From an underground town, the largest and lowest lake on the continent, the longest fence in the world and striking and unique geological formations, South Australia has a lot to offer the curious traveller. This tour explores the most impressive sights of this small state. Discover the unique mining town of Coober Pedy, the once off-limits military town of Woomera, the historic towns of Glendambo, Maree and Blinman. Visit William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track and discover the striking groundwater Mound Springs. Explore the Flinders Ranges and see the incredible geological site of Wilpena Pound. Discover some of the harshest environment's in Australia and learn the stories of the families and characters who make this unique location their home.

Coober Pedy: In the desert of the South Australian outback, in what can be one of Australia's hottest climates, is the town of Coober Pedy. In a bid to avoid the heat, much of it has been built underground. Our tour is well ahead of the harsh desert heat so come and join us for this unique outback adventure, where you’ll get to visit an underground house and church. Admire the lunar-like landscape, which has been the backdrop for many movies, including Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Red Planet. Coober Pedy is also known as the Opal Capital of the World, and there are plenty of opportunities to purchase the pretty gemstones – or even find your own.

Flinders Ranges: Rugged mountain ranges, dramatic gorges, peaceful creeks lined with river red gums and abundant wildlife is just the beginning of what awaits you at one of South Australia’s most popular tourist destinations. Experience the park’s spectacular scenery along an excellent network of walking trails. This park is renowned for its Aboriginal rock art sites, geological history, impressive fossils and well-preserved cultural heritage.

Day 1 Monday 19 August 2019: ADELAIDE TO PORT AUGUSTA

Begin your tour with an airport transfer from Toowoomba to Brisbane Airport, or meet at the Brisbane airport or at Adelaide Airport.  On arrival at Adelaide airport, meet your coach and crew at 1.00pm.  Depart Adelaide and travel north to Port Wakefield located at the head of St Vincent Gulf.  After a short break here, continue north in view of the Southern Flinders Ranges to the east and Spencer Gulf to the west.  Arrive in Port Augusta and explore the historic town located at the “Cross Roads of Australia” for road and rail transport.  Check in to your accommodation and enjoy dinner at the motel. Meals (LD)
Stay: Acacia Ridge Motor Inn, Port Augusta

Day 2 Tuesday 20 August 2019: PORT AUGUSTA TO COOBER PEDY

After breakfast, depart Port Augusta and join the Stuart Highway heading north to the tiny railway settlement of Pimba then a short distance to Woomera.  The town of Woomera lies just to the south of the Defence Forces Woomera Prohibited Area – which covers a massive 122,188 square kilometres.  Explore this once off limits town, including a visit to the Woomera Heritage Centre where you can gain an insight into the operation of the Woomera Rocket Range.  On a drive around this purpose-built town you’ll also see the many rockets on display.  Later, re-join the Stuart Highway and travel to Glendambo which is named after the massive sheep station located nearby.  Enjoy lunch at the Glendambo Hotel before setting sights on Coober Pedy.  Arrive in this outback opal mining town late afternoon and check in to your accommodation for the next two nights. Meals: (BLD)
Stay:
Opal Inn Motel, Coober Pedy

DAY 3 Wednesday 21 August 2019: COOBER PEDY
This morning enjoy a local guided sightseeing tour of Coober Pedy.  Stop to view the famous golf course that has sand scrapes instead of greens and offers members reciprocal membership with St. Andrews Golf course in Scotland!  Visit the Serbian under ground church and tour a private underground home.  With approximately 1.5 million open mining shafts in the area (most have been abandoned), you’ll see that Coober Pedy has an interesting landscape.  No visit would be complete without a visit to the Old Timers Mine, an attraction like no other, providing a fascinating insight into the history of the world-famous opal mining industry and its colourful characters.  The mine’s extensive displays, historical memorabilia and the two underground dug-outs are fitted out exactly as they were in the 1920s and 30s enabling you to experience the lifestyle of the miners of the day.  The afternoon has been left free for you to explore your own interests around town.  You can visit the opal shops, try your hand at noodling for opals (searching abandoned mullock heaps) or relax at the motel. Meals: (BLD)
Stay:
Opal Inn Motel, Coober Pedy

Day 4 Thursday 22 August 2019: COOBER PEDY TO LEIGH CREEK
Today, hit the remote outback region of South Australia.  Travel east to William Creek, the closest town to Lake Eyre.  The Lake rarely has water in it but we might just be lucky enough to catch some of this years’ fill.  This enormous salt pan contains the lowest natural point in Australia at 15 metres below sea level and when full, this is Australias’ largest lake covering some 9,500 square kilometres with roughly the same salinity as the sea.  You may choose to enjoy an optional scenic flight over Lake Eyre before lunch at the William Creek Hotel.  Later join the Oodnadatta Track and travel east towards Marree.  This afternoon stop at Mound Springs to discover the Artesian Springs which are formed by deep Great Artesian Basin water rising through cracked crust.  See the old railway siding at Curdimurka and follow the original Ghan railway line.  See the longest fence in the world, the Wild dog fence, measuring 5.6 million metres of wire mesh.  Later this afternoon we arrive in Leigh Creek where we check into the hotel for the night. Meals: (BLD)
Stay:
Leigh Creek Outback Resort, Leigh Creek

Day 5 Friday 23 August 2019: LEIGH CREEK TO WILPENA POUND
Today we follow along the edge of the Flinders Ranges to Parachilna for lunch in the historic Prairie Hotel.  Later, enter the Central Flinders Ranges before an afternoon visit to historic and picturesque Blinman, an old copper mining town dating back to 1859.  From here head south to the Flinders Ranges National Park stopping for spectacular views from Stokes Hill Lookout before arriving at the Wilpena Pound Resort, our home for the next two nights. Meals: (BLD)
Stay:
Wilpena Pound Resort, Flinders Ranges

Day 6 Saturday 24 August 2019: WILPENA POUND AND FLINDERS RANGES
Wilpena Pound is a striking and unusual geological formation resembling an almost circular crater with towering walls and a central depression.  From the ground the walls are impressive but to really appreciate the scale and magnitude of the pound, it is best seen from the air.  This morning has been left free for you to take an optional scenic flight over Wilpena Pound, truly the best way to really experience the size and majesty of the Pound.  Mid-morning join your guide for a leisurely walking tour along Wilpena creek into Wilpena Pound and on to the Old Hills Homestead where you can learn about the hardships the Hills family had to face at the turn of the century.  There is an optional hike up to Wangarra Hill lookout offering panoramic views of Wilpena Pound.  Enjoy the stillness and extraordinary beauty under great river red gums as you nibble on cake and coffee by the homestead.  Return to the resort for lunch then spend the afternoon exploring more than 800 million years of geological history in the “Corridor through time”.  Marvel at the rugged beauty of the Gorges in search for yellow-footed rock wallabies while experiencing the sweeping views of Bunyeroo Valley and the eastern wall of Wilpena Pound. Meals:(BLD)
Stay: Wilpena Pound Resort, Flinders Ranges

Day 7 Sunday 25 August 2019: WILPENA POUND TO ADELAIDE
After breakfast, depart Wilpena Pound Resort and head south.  The scenery is outstanding as you travel through Carrieton, Orroroo and Peterborough to the beautiful Clare Valley wine area for a lunch break.  The final leg of your tour takes you back to Adelaide to arrive at the Adelaide airport approximately 3.00pm.  For travellers returning to Brisbane and Toowoomba, board your flight and return to Queensland with Toowoomba travellers transferring back home. Meals:(B)
