Granite Belt Getaway

There is nothing quite like the Granite Belt. It’s part of Queensland, but it’s a different country.  At 1000 metres elevation, the air seems fresher, the sky bluer and you’ll discover a landscape of dramatic beauty and diversity.  Whist the Granite Belt is well known for its wines you’ll also find plenty of passionate people converting fresh local produce into gourmet delights.  From exquisite hand-made cheeses to specialty vinegars, olives, preserves, jams and chutneys.  Combine all this with good old-fashioned country hospitality, you’re sure to love this short escape.

Girraween & Granite Belt

South of Stanthorpe huge granite boulders tower above open forests in the spectacular Girraween National Park.  Relax over a cuppa and step in to the Visitor Centre or enjoy an easy stroll along the Bald Rock Creek with vistas of The Pyramid, then wind through the forest to gaze in wonder at Girraween’s natural stone archway.  Lunch today will be at Jam Works Gourmet Foods, where they take pride in selecting only the freshest and best quality ingredients.  Browse through the shop where you’ll find everything from Jams, Preserves, Jellies, Pickles, Relishes Chutneys and more.  This afternoon we visit Jester Hills Wines, a family owed Boutique winery and cellar door with estate grown, award winning wines.  Enjoy the wine tastings where the well trained and courteous staff make the experience pleasurable and educational.  Finish the day at the Granite Belt Christmas Farm, renowned for bringing the ‘Christmas Spirit’ alive all year round.  Enjoy a delicious hot chocolate, then capture the magic of Christmas through the doors of the Mistletoe Store while browsing the spectacular range of Christmas decorations and gifts.  Don’t forget to taste, indulge and enjoy Mrs. Claus’ festive hand-crafted sweet treats and gourmet products.  Return to our accommodation in Stanthorpe and enjoy dinner in their Steakhouse Restaurant. Day 3: Thursday 30 May 2019

Aloomba and Cherrabah

This morning we’ll visit Aloomba Lavender - part of a 4000-acre cattle property east of Stanthorpe where the Bonner Family have been involved in the cattle industry for over 100 years.  They established their Lavender plantation in 1998 and the lavender covers 6 acres with approximately 12,000 plants.  They sell virtually all their lavender and its products through their own gift shop on the farm.  We’ll enjoy a cuppa here whilst hearing stories from the owners, then stroll through the shop to check out their range of products.  Next, discover a rare slice of Australia carved from over 5,000 acres of spectacular wilderness, set high in the mountains - Cherrabah Resort.  We’ll have lunch in the restaurant before exploring the most beautiful sites within the resort while riding a tractor train.  See the Slab Hut, Fig Tree, Balancing Rock, and Norma’s Lookout for some good photo shoots.  Savour the flavour of a relaxing afternoon tea of Billy Tea and Damper afterwards.  Then relax in your resort room or explore a little further, maybe a game of putt putt golf or head across and feed the animals.  Meals: BLD

Accommodation: Cherrabah Resort

Day 4: Friday 31 May 2019

Cherrabah – Toowoomba

Make our way across to Killarney, tucked close to the border of Queensland and New South Wales in the McPherson Range, Killarney gives access to spectacular waterfalls and equally spectacular views.  We’ll stop to view the most impressive of the falls - Queen Mary Falls, cascading 40m down a sheer cliff-face.  We’ll also take in the beautiful views from Carr’s Lookout and learn the history of a 1955 plane crash on Mt Superbus, the wreckage of which is still there. The Condamine River headwaters are also visible below.  Return to Killarney for a hot lunch in the hotel then travel on the back roads to beautiful North Branch Valley near Maryvale and the Gleneden Family Farm and Bullock Team.  This picturesque and inviting property has a wide range of animals and plants for food production.  This afternoon we’ll enjoy watching the Gleneden Bullock Team. These enormous and powerful, yet intelligent and co-operative working bullocks are an awesome sight! You will be amazed by what can be achieved with a bullock team controlled by simple word of command.
